The Izmit follower case of the CORALIS project is focused on the implementation of industrial symbiosis in the Kocaeli province of Turkey. One of the first steps in the Izmit follower case was to conduct a feasibility study to identify potential barriers and opportunities for industrial symbiosis in the region for valorization of spent caustic and CO2 from a local Tupras refinery. The study identified several potential areas for valorization. Pulp & paper and cardboard industries show the potential for industrial symbiosis with spent caustic, but there are barriers such as the need for large investment in emerging technology and confidentiality issues. Laboratory studies will be carried out to investigate the effects of spent caustic on cardboard industry. The investigation of valorization of CO2 is a result of different synergies evolved during the CORALIS project, and a techno-economic assessment for carbon capture in TUPRAS refineries was carried out. The barriers and limitations were also investigated and a summary of the study is presented in the documented work so far.

Based on the findings of the feasibility study, the project partners worked with local stakeholders to develop and implement industrial symbiosis solutions in the region. The project partners facilitated the formation of a network of companies interested in industrial symbiosis, includes companies from a variety of industries, including metalworking, pulp & paper, chemical manufacturing, etc. Overall, the Izmit follower case of the CORALIS project has made significant progress in promoting industrial symbiosis in the Kocaeli province of Turkey and the project continues to work with local stakeholders to promote industrial symbiosis in the region and create a more sustainable economy.
