CORALIS released its first scientific publication titled “Techno-Economic Feasibility of Biomass Gasification for the Decarbonisation of Energy-Intensive Industries”. The paper, authored by Guerrero et al. investigates the techno-economic feasibility of biomass gasification for decarbonizing energy-intensive industries, particularly focusing on the steel manufacturing sector. In response to global decarbonization policies and the European Union’s target of a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, the study explores the co-production of syngas and biochar as a potential solution. Through a comprehensive techno-economic analysis, the research evaluates economic feasibility and influential parameters for successful deployment. The findings indicate that biomass gasification, specifically in a scenario processing 20,000 tons of biomass annually, demonstrates promising feasibility with a payback period of approximately three years and a net present value of around 15 million EUR. This suggests the potential emergence of biomass gasification as a viable alternative in the mid-term, especially for industries with ambitious decarbonization targets.
