Institute of Communication and Computer Systems
Brief Description
The Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS) is a non-profit academic research body established in 1989 by the Greek Ministry of Education to carry out research and development activities in the area of telecommunications, systems and techniques, computer systems and their applications in transceivers, radar, electromagnetic sensors, satellite and wireless communications, electromagnetic phenomena modelling, neural networks, systems, software and hardware engineering, telematics and multimedia applications, transport applications, control systems, biomedical engineering and electric power (www.iccs.gr).
It is closely associated with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (SECE) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (est. 1837), which is the oldest and most prestigious academic institute in Greece. The personnel of ICCS consists of academic staff (~80 University Professors), 40 senior researchers and more than 500 researchers (including PhD students) in twenty research laboratories.
Within ICCS, the I-SENSE Research Group (http://i-sense.iccs.gr) is very active in areas dealing with Intelligent Transportation Systems, embedded systems and sensor networks, cyber-security, communications and IoT applications for improved logistics, innovative middleware/Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions for many application domains (logistics, environment, security), emergency communications, communication protocols and gateway design and implementation.
The I-SENSE Research Group comprises more than 60 personnel members (Professors, post-doctoral researchers, post-graduate researchers, and administrative staff).
It has also coordinated and participated in numerous research and development activities in the framework of both European and national projects. Indicatively, the following projects are worth mentioning: in H2020, SCENT (coordinator, system integration and architecture), SENSKIN (coordinator, system integration and architecture), SAFERtec (coordinator, security assurance assessment), IN-PREP (coordinator, security-enabled middleware services), PLUGGY (coordinator), RANGER (technical manager, data fusion and integration with legacy systems), PASSME (Wearables and IoT for passenger mobility, smart localization, technical manager); in FP7, AutoNet2030 (coordinator), VR-Hyperspace, GAME-ABLING, ManuVAR, AdaptIVe, Use-It-Wisely, CityMobil2, TEAM, MOBiNET, INACHUS (coordinator, deep-learning), RECONASS (coordinator).
Main tasks and responsibilities within the project
ICCS is leading the T3.4 aiming to analyse the communication protocols in the industrial parks and develop protocols and data exchange systems to secure information sharing among partners based on the long experience in critical communications, secure data exchange and cybersecurity.
