A recent study titled “Business Models for Industrial Symbiosis: A Literature Review”, published in the journal sustainability, aimed at gathering all existing knowledge of the current state-of-the-art industrial symbiosis and its business models in order to identify areas of opportunity and knowledge gaps.
The main goal of this study is to understand the current state and business models of industrial symbiosis to identify areas for improvement and gaps in knowledge. The researchers used a bibliometric analysis and a systematic review of existing literature to categorize and codify different aspects of industrial symbiosis. They identified various tools, theoretical models, simulation models, and business models designed to facilitate the transition towards industrial symbiosis.
The findings suggest that existing studies often focus on material flow and strategies companies can use to adopt industrial symbiosis. However, there’s a need for further exploration into areas like cultural transformation, effective mechanisms for recording and exchanging information, and the negotiations necessary to promote collaboration.
