According to “What a Waste: A Global Review of Solid Waste Management”, solid waste management is a vital municipal service provided by city governments worldwide. As urbanization accelerates, the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) is increasing rapidly.
-Ten years ago, 2.9 billion urban residents produced 0.64 kg of MSW per person per day (0.68 billion tonnes per year).
-Today, it is estimated that 3 billion residents generate 1.2 kg per person per day (1.3 billion tonnes per year).
-By 2025, projections suggest 4.3 billion urban residents will produce around 1.42 kg/capita/day of MSW (2.2 billion tonnes per year).
