The European Aluminium Innovation Hub is hosting an online webinar on 21st of January 2025, at 10:00 – 12:00 (CET)  on industrial symbiosis in the aluminium industry, as part of the CORALIS project. This event aims to showcase innovative strategies for resource efficiency, focusing on how industries can collaborate to transform by-products into valuable resources, reduce waste, and drive circular economy practices.

The webinar, titled “Exploring Industrial Symbiosis in the aluminium industry under the CORALIS Framework” will highlight the importance of industrial symbiosis (IS) in the aluminium sector, an industry known for its high energy consumption and waste generation. IS encourages cooperation between industries, enabling them to exchange resources like energy, materials, and by-products. This approach not only minimises waste but also enhances resource efficiency, lowering emissions and promoting a circular economy.

The event will include presentations from EU-funded projects, demonstrating the application of IS in various industrial contexts:

  • CORALIS Project: Insights from the project’s implementation in Brescia, Italy, where by-products from steel, cast iron, and aluminium production are being converted into raw materials for other industries.
  • REACTIV Project: Showcasing the transformation of bauxite residue into a sustainable alternative for clinker in cement production, reducing both waste and CO₂ emissions.
  • BAUXAL II Project: Presenting innovative recycling of salt slag, a hazardous waste from aluminium recycling, into refractory-grade bauxite.
  • SAIS-SPIRE Project: Focusing on skill development and training to support the effective implementation of industrial symbiosis across various sectors, including aluminium.

The webinar targets a broad audience interested in resource efficiency and industrial collaboration, including industry stakeholders from the aluminium, steel, cement, and refractory sectors, technology providers offering innovative solutions for waste transformation, Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) and sustainability experts, environmental officers and sustainability managers from various industries, as well as policy makers and industry associations focused on promoting circular economy policies.
